Light Extraction Enhancement Techniques for Inorganic Scintillators

Scintillators play a key role in the detection chain of several applications which rely on use ionizing radiation, and it is often mandatory to extract detect generated scintillation light as efficiently possible. Typical inorganic scintillators do however feature high index refraction, impacts extraction efficiency negative way. Furthermore, such preclinical Positron Emission Tomography (PET) pixelated with small pitch. In this case, applying reflectors crystal pixel surface, done conventionally, can have dramatic impact packing fraction thus overall system sensitivity. This paper presents study techniques, well combinations thereof, for two most used (LYSO BGO). Novel approaches, employing Distributed Bragg Reflectors (DBRs), metal coatings, modified Photonic Crystal (PhC) structure, are described detail compared commonly techniques. The nanostructure PhC surrounded by hybrid organic/inorganic silica sol-gel buffer layer ensures robustness while maintaining its performance unchanged.
